Weaponizing Collective Defense Against Fraud
The evolving cybersecurity landscape in Africa demands a paradigm shift in how financial institutions approach threat management. Traditional silos and competitive secrecy have created structural vulnerabilities that fraudsters exploit with impunity—moving from one platform to another while victim organizations conceal incidents to protect their brand.
Prembly founder Lanre Ogungbe argues this “island of knowledge” mentality is counterproductive. With the company’s new utility, FraudLens, he aims to create a shared intelligence network where threat data becomes a real-time defensive asset rather than proprietary baggage.
The Flaws in Isolated Defenses
Ogungbe points out that modern digital transactions inherently connect multiple entities—payment processors, banks, mobile money providers—forming complex ecosystems. When one institution hides a breach to avoid reputational damage, it creates blind spots across the entire network.
“Fraud thrives in hiding,” he says. “By treating threat data as something to be contained rather than shared, we’re essentially allowing criminals to upgrade their tactics while defenders remain in the dark.”
The CBN’s new fraud and liability framework underscores this shift—banks are now directly responsible for losses resulting from inadequate security measures. This creates both risk and opportunity for collaboration.
How FraudLens Works
FraudLens treats threat signals as active ammunition to be deployed immediately across the network. When a fraudulent actor or anomalous process is detected on one platform, the signal triggers automated defenses on all connected systems in real-time.
Imagine this scenario: A fraudster tests an exploit against a small fintech startup—instead of moving to another target, they find themselves locked out of the entire financial system as banks and other institutions instantly implement countermeasures based on the shared intelligence.
Addressing Privacy Concerns
The design incorporates multiple layers of governance to ensure data integrity and prevent misuse. FraudLens operates as an advisory utility rather than a centralized repository, with strict controls over access and usage.
