Mamor Capital Raises R300 Million ($18.8 Million) for South Africa’s Tech Ecosystem

Johannesburg-based venture capital firm Mamor Capital has reached a significant milestone with its debut fund, securing R300 million (approximately $18.8 million) in its first close. This achievement positions the black women-owned and managed firm to begin investing in post-revenue technology companies as it continues fundraising toward a total of R550 million ($34 million).

The Public Investment Corporation (PIC), South Africa’s largest asset manager, serves as the fund’s anchor investor, demonstrating confidence in Mamor Capital’s strategy and team. Other backers include the SA SME Fund’s High Impact Seed Fund of Funds, the Technology Innovation Agency, and the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency.

Mamor Capital is specifically targeting South African technology businesses that are already generating revenue and have demonstrated market validation through paying customers. The fund’s focus areas encompass financial access, digital infrastructure, and solutions that expand participation in the formal digital economy.

“After years of fundraising, we can now put capital to work in companies that align with our vision while delivering competitive returns for investors,” said founder and CEO Mamokete Ramathe.

The decision to focus on post-revenue businesses reflects a more selective investment environment where venture capitalists seek proven models rather than unvalidated concepts. Co-founder and CFO Fuzlin Levy-Hassen emphasized the firm’s rigorous assessment process, which evaluates not only business fundamentals but also management team strength and Mamor Capital’s ability to add value beyond financial support.

The PIC’s investment carries particular significance for South Africa’s venture market, where institutional capital remains challenging to secure despite a relatively mature tech ecosystem. This commitment from a major asset manager could catalyze further investor interest in local VC funds.

“This reflects our confidence in Mamor Capital’s team, strategy, and transformation focus,” stated Leon Smit, acting chief investment officer at the PIC. “Institutional investors can play a critical role in providing patient capital to support high-growth companies.”

Mamor Capital’s gender lens approach aims to address historical underrepresentation of women founders in South Africa’s funding landscape.

With R300 million currently available and another R250 million left to raise, Mamor Capital is poised to make a tangible impact on the country’s technology sector. The firm’s success will ultimately be measured by its ability to identify promising companies and help them scale into sustainable businesses.
