Mastercard’s Vision for the Next Decade

Ling Hai, Mastercard’s new CFO, unveiled a growth strategy focused on emerging technologies and evolving consumer behavior during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference. Hai emphasized Mastercard’s position as both a payment network and a B2B technology provider.

The company is expanding its offerings across multiple commerce frontiers:

  • Agentic AI: As platforms like ChatGPT transform online transactions, Mastercard sees opportunity in providing secure credentialing for both human and automated purchasing processes
  • Sovereign switch modernization: In the UAE, a partnership with the central bank powers the Jaywan domestic payment system while offering advanced cybersecurity—a model they aim to replicate globally
  • Digital asset infrastructure: Following the acquisition of BVNK, Mastercard is integrating stablecoin solutions for B2B payments, cross-border remittances, and tokenized deposits
  • Value-added services: These now represent 40% of net revenue, including data analytics, fraud prevention, and cybersecurity offerings like their Threat Intelligence service powered by Recorded Future

Hai noted that Mastercard is uniquely positioned to serve as the underlying technology for various payment systems, whether physical, online, or AI-driven—a strategy designed to ensure relevance across evolving commerce landscapes.
