Moove Becomes a Unicorn with $250 Million Investment

African fintech startup Moove has officially reached unicorn status after securing a $2.5 billion valuation in its latest funding round. The company, which provides vehicle financing and mobility solutions, received $250 million from investors including Mubadala and Toyota’s growth fund.

From Vehicle Financing to Autonomous Fleets

Moove initially gained recognition for helping ride-hailing drivers purchase vehicles in Lagos, Nigeria, through a drive-to-own model. However, the company has strategically expanded beyond vehicle financing into new markets.

In a significant move toward its future vision, Moove partnered with Alphabet’s Waymo to manage fleets of robotaxis—fully autonomous vehicles that use AI sensors and cameras for passenger transport without human drivers. This partnership reflects Moove’s bet on the evolving mobility landscape.

Global Expansion Plans

The new funding will support Moove’s expansion into the United States, Europe, and Asia, with a focus on building infrastructure for autonomous vehicles. The company plans to:

  • Build dedicated service hubs for self-driving cars
  • Create “nest” facilities where vehicles can be cleaned, charged, inspected, and serviced
  • More than triple the size of its autonomous vehicle team by year-end

Market Opportunity

The autonomous vehicle market in the Middle East and Africa is projected to reach $18.35 billion by 2034 as AI and electric vehicles continue to advance. Moove’s strategic partnerships position it to capitalize on this growth.

Moove’s journey from a local vehicle financing provider to a global mobility innovator highlights the evolving opportunities for African startups in the technology sector.
