MTN Eyes Lending Market in Key African Nations

Africa’s largest telecom operator, MTN Group, is seeking fintech licenses to directly offer loans across several key markets including Nigeria, Ghana and others. Currently, MTN facilitates loans through partnerships but wants regulatory approval to lend from its own balance sheet.

Why This Matters for Africa’s Financial Landscape

The move positions MTN as a potential major player in bridging the continent’s significant credit gap - where an estimated 80% of Nigerian MSMEs lack access to formal lending, representing a $236 billion funding shortfall. With over 70 million MoMo users and processing more than $500 billion in transactions annually, MTN already possesses key infrastructure for a successful lending business.

This expansion represents a natural evolution for telcos that have built extensive digital ecosystems - transitioning from payment facilitators to direct lenders. It also intensifies competition with traditional banks while potentially extending financial services to millions currently underserved.
