Transforming Digital Finance in Africa

MTN Group Fintech has completed a significant migration of its mobile money (MoMo) platform to cloud infrastructure across four African countries: Eswatini, Ghana, Rwanda, and Uganda. This initiative is part of MTN’s broader Ambition 2030 strategy to position fintech as the leading digital financial services provider on the continent.

The modernized MoMo system runs on Ericsson’s fFintech Platform and offers several key advantages:

  • Improved Performance: Reduced CPU processing overhead by up to 86%
  • Faster Transactions: API response times improved by up to 80%
  • Enhanced Scalability: Designed to handle increasing transaction volumes with high availability
  • Reduced Resource Utilization: More efficient use of computing resources across the platform

Meeting Growing Demand for Digital Payments

The migration addresses the rising need for resilient and scalable infrastructure that can support mobile money platforms in Africa. As digital payment adoption continues to surge, businesses like MTN must modernize their systems to meet evolving customer expectations.

“With this cloud-native foundation, we’re enhancing performance, strengthening resilience, and accelerating innovation across our markets,” said Artemij Demidczyk, Acting Chief Technology & Information Officer at MTN Group Fintech.

Expansion Across the Continent

The project is already underway in Cameroon, with plans to extend to the Republic of the Congo, Benin, and Zambia. MTN aims to migrate all 16 of its markets to cloud infrastructure by 2030.

This strategic move aligns with MTN’s broader separation of fintech operations from its traditional telecom business—a trend seen in Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda—to comply with regulations, attract independent investment, and accelerate digital innovation.
