Nigeria Leads African Equity Funding with $214 Million

Nigerian startups have secured the highest equity funding across Africa in the first half of 2026, raising a total of $214 million according to data from Africa The Big Deal. This positions Nigeria ahead of Egypt ($183 million) and significantly surpasses South Africa’s $66 million and Kenya’s $46 million.

While Nigeria dominates in equity funding, Egypt leads overall with $327 million raised—a 29% difference. The ‘Big Four’ African markets (Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa) collectively accounted for 58% of the total $1.37 billion raised.

Tanzania follows with $52 million, while Ivory Coast and Morocco secured $45 million and $28 million respectively.

Early-Stage Investment Surge in Nigeria

A notable trend is the increase in early-stage funding for Nigerian startups—the country saw 40 ventures secure at least $100,000 each, surpassing Egypt’s 26. This indicates growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s startup ecosystem.

Sector Focus and Future Outlook

The fintech sector remains the most attractive to investors, capturing 41% of total funding, followed by climate tech at 39%. Logistics and transport secured 35%, while agritech/food received only 7%—highlighting potential gaps in investment across critical sectors like healthtech and edutech.
