A new accounting platform called stub is gaining traction in South Africa by offering a simple, AI-powered solution specifically designed for everyday entrepreneurs. Founded in 2023, the startup addresses a gap in the market for accessible financial tools that cater to micro and informal businesses.

“Traditional accounting platforms are generally built for accountants and established SMEs,” explains Tayla Dandridge, co-founder and CEO of stub. “They’re powerful but often too complex for someone running a tuck shop, salon, or side hustle.” The real competition, she notes, is often spreadsheets, WhatsApp chats, or physical filing systems.

stubs approach focuses on automation and intelligent data models to categorize transactions, reconcile bank feeds, and surface insights—freeing business owners from tedious paperwork. While offering a user-friendly interface, the platform maintains full double-entry accounting capabilities for compliance.

Key partnerships with iKhokha, Capitec, and Yoco have accelerated stubs growth. The startup now supports nearly 10,000 businesses across South Africa’s major cities—a significant increase from under 4,000 just seven months ago.

stubs customer base includes micro-businesses like tuck shops, salons, fast food outlets, and independent consultants who often lack access to sophisticated financial tools. The company operates on a freemium model with paid upgrades for advanced features.
