From Stranded Travelers to Fintech Innovators: The Story of Timon

Imagine being stranded in a foreign country because your bank card keeps declining. This frustrating reality is all too common for millions of Africans traveling abroad, but two entrepreneurs decided to turn this pain point into an opportunity.

A decade ago, Oluwatomi Ayorinde found himself unable to access funds while on a trip to Germany, highlighting the challenges of cross-border payments for Africans. Years later, Chizaram Ucheaga experienced a similar issue in France. These shared frustrations led them to co-found Timon, a stablecoin-powered travel and payments platform.

Building on Experience

Ayorinde’s background includes leading PayForce (acquired by FairMoney) and building BankOne at AppZone, while Ucheaga founded financial inclusion startup Clymb Technologies. Their diverse experiences gave them unique perspectives on the problem: “We both realized that crossing borders shouldn’t mean leaving your financial life behind,” Ayorinde explains.

The Timon Solution

The platform allows users to fund wallets with local currencies, USD, or stablecoins and access services like virtual/physical cards, international transfers, and eSIMs in over 200 countries. Through strategic partnerships with local payment providers, Timon enables users to pay “like locals” wherever they travel.

Stablecoin Adoption

The startup has seen significant growth through stablecoin adoption, which now accounts for roughly 70% of transaction volume. This reflects a broader trend among African consumers seeking more efficient ways to manage and move their money across borders.

With over $34 million in transactions processed as of March 2024, Timon is empowering a new generation of globally mobile Africans to navigate international payments with ease.
