WayaWaya Strengthens Leadership with Experienced Banking Executive
Kenyan fintech startup WayaWaya has appointed Raj Singh, a former executive at Chase Bank Kenya, to its board of directors and as a strategic advisor. This move signals the company’s commitment to deepening financial sector partnerships and expanding across new markets.
Strategic Addition to Board
Singh brings over two decades of experience in banking and fintech across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Prior to joining WayaWaya, he served as Group Chief Operating Officer and Director of Retail Banking at Chase Bank Kenya, where he spearheaded digital transformation initiatives. His previous roles include leadership positions at FCMB Nigeria and ICICI Bank India.
Why This Matters for African Fintechs
WayaWaya’s appointment aligns with a broader trend among African fintech companies seeking seasoned banking professionals to guide their scaling journeys. Recent examples include Moniepoint’s acquisition of Sumac Microfinance Bank and Cellulant’s hiring of Xapo Bank executive Anthony Hernandez.
Teddy Ogallo, WayaWaya founder and CEO, emphasized the importance of Singh’s expertise: “Raj joins us at a pivotal moment as we transition from innovation to scale. His banking, fintech, and international experience will be invaluable in shaping our growth strategy.”
What’s Next for WayaWaya?
With Singh on board, WayaWaya aims to:
- Strengthen partnerships with banks and merchants
- Expand into new African markets and beyond
- Enhance corporate governance structures
- Drive commercial growth through strategic advisory
The appointment follows a previous dispute regarding claims of acquisition by Kenyan customer experience company Ajua, which WayaWaya maintains was a consultancy arrangement.
