Transforming Education Through AI-Powered Assessment

A South African startup called The Marking App is revolutionizing how teachers grade handwritten assignments. Their innovative platform uses artificial intelligence to mark tests in seconds, providing detailed feedback directly on student papers—all without requiring new technology or infrastructure.

The idea emerged from founder Kabelo Mahlobogwane’s own experience as a teacher struggling with overwhelming administrative tasks. Recognizing that educators spend countless hours grading instead of teaching and supporting students, he created The Marking App to address this critical need.

Designed for real classroom environments—particularly in under-resourced schools where technology access is limited—the platform allows teachers to scan or upload assessments using standard printers, scanners, or even mobile phones. The AI then automatically marks the papers, generates personalized feedback, and produces comprehensive performance analytics that educators can use to track student progress and identify areas for improvement.

“By reducing marking workload by up to 80%, our app empowers teachers to focus more on what matters most: engaging with students and creating meaningful learning experiences,” explains Mahlobogwane. Early results have been promising, with the startup currently working with over 50 schools, impacting more than 8,000 learners.

The Marking App’s growth has been supported by grants from organizations like the Trevor Noah Foundation and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars programme. While its primary market is South Africa, it has expanded into Eswatini through partnerships with local universities, with plans for broader African expansion underway.
