Building the Foundation for AI-Driven Businesses
Cape Town-based startup Verascient has announced a successful seed funding round of $1.2 million (ZAR 19.5 million), positioning the company as a key player in enabling enterprise adoption of artificial intelligence across Africa.
The oversubscribed round was led by Founder Collective, with participation from prominent investors including Andrena Ventures, Cambridge Enterprise, Summit Ventures, and angel backers Alan Knott-Craig and Shayne Mann.
A Temporal Knowledge Graph Approach
Verascient is developing what they call an “operating system for AI-native businesses.” Their core innovation lies in using a temporal knowledge graph—a specialized database that tracks how information changes over time—to organize institutional knowledge. This approach aims to make data more accessible and reliable for AI applications.
From Hallucination Detection to Enterprise Infrastructure
The company’s journey began with the development of an AI hallucination detector before pivoting towards a broader enterprise infrastructure solution. Today, Verascient focuses on financial services, insurance, and logistics sectors—industries where data accuracy and reliability are paramount.
Future Plans
With this new funding, Verascient will expand its engineering team in South Africa, further develop its technology platform, and support additional enterprise deployments across the region. The company’s vision is to provide businesses with a robust foundation for building AI-powered applications that drive real-world outcomes.
