Energy Visibility: New Tool Helps Residents Track Local Power Reliability

South African energy startup Wetility has released a public lookup tool that allows residents to explore detailed power outage data specific to their municipality. The platform provides insights into average outage durations, monthly trends, and how local performance compares to national averages.

This launch follows the release of Wetility’s 2025 Energy Resilience Report, which revealed significant disparities in grid reliability across South Africa—with outages ranging from under two hours to over 24 hours depending on location. The report highlights challenges faced by municipalities including aging infrastructure, theft, and revenue constraints.

“This data makes clear that the conversation about grid reliability cannot be a national one alone,” said Franta Pour, chief commercial officer at Wetility. “Many municipalities are operating under significant pressure…and that reality is reflected in the variability we see.” The new tool aims to provide greater transparency and enable more informed decision-making for residents, businesses, and local authorities.

Wetility offers an integrated platform combining energy solutions, fintech services, and AI-powered data analytics—providing a multi-utility solution at no upfront cost. Their approach focuses on making resilient energy access affordable through technology-driven efficiency.
